Siquijor Food Entrepreneurs Form Organization
On February 21, 2006, food entrepreneurs of the province of Siquijor formed the Siquijor Association of Food Entrepreneurs (SAFE). The group hopes to achieve several goals through its organization. Firstly, they hope to gain a common understanding among processors so that they can form linkages between each other. They also hope to avail of government funds that are available to such organizations in order to improve their businesses. Lastly, they wish to improve the marketing of their products. One way they plan to improve their marketing is through their packaging. Members may show their affiliation by including the SAFE logo, which is a butterfly, on their packages.
The 17 members of the organization include those who process peanuts, producing peanut butter, roasted peanuts, peanut brittle, peanut polvorone, and round peanuts; meat, including longganiza, tapa, and tocino; bananas, including banana chips and banana ketchup; torta, Siquijor's favorite cake; and tamarind candies.
Officers of the group include Chairman Renie Magsayo of Renie's Peanut Processing, Vice-Chairman Butch Duran of Duran's Banana Chips, Secretary Evelyn Suico of Peling's Homemade Peanut Butter, Treasurer Susan Patilano of Liloan Women's Cooperative (producers of virgin coconut oil), Auditors Virgilio Masayon of Vi's Bakery and Ruth Caberte of Licoan Rural Improvement Club (producers of coconut biscuits and macaroons), Public Relations Officers Lydia Ocay of KAPANIG Milk and Amparong Manginsay of Liga nga Kababaihan (Power chapter).
